Screen of C. elegans mutations for nerve defects

The dig-l gene is proposed to encode an adhesion molecule that plays an important role in the development of the C. elegans nervous system. To support dig-l's hypothesized location, the creation of large deletions in the gene, which are easier to locate than point mutations, was attempted, through animal exposure to gamma radiation. The animals' neurons were stained and subsequently examined under a microscope to screen putative mutants for the Dig-l phenotype. At least one mutant was successfully isolated.
