Brachytherapy is a medical practice in which a radioactive material is surgically implanted in a patient to eliminate cancer cells. A better understanding of medium energy brachytherapy sources, such as Ytterbium-169 and Selenium-75, may lead to a safer and more effective implementation of the practice. Using gold shielding it is possible to modulate the intensity of these sources, protecting healthy cells while irradiating tumor cells. To gauge the capabilities of these materials, the results of the Yb169 and Se75 simulations were compared to that of Iridium-192 simulations. It was found that gold shielding is much more effective against the medium-energy sources than Ir192. Therefore, Yb169 and Se75 prove to be promising subjects for further research on intensity modulated brachytherapy.
