The ability for diet and gut microbiota to communicate with the brain has resulted in an emergence of an exciting new concept in health and disease. This project consisted of an authentic research experience in the laboratory, exploring the effects of gut microbiota on neurological disorders, as well as a literature study and analysis of the popular perceptions and understanding of dietary supplement use, as represented by written media from 2007 to 2016. Together, the work presented both the research that goes on in the laboratory as well as how the public presentation of scientific research will influence how science is adopted and used by the general public and whether or not work like our research on the gut/brain axis can be effectively translated into useful human practices.
