Ethos and identity within multi-user domains -- communications analysis of MUD identity formation

Public

Prior research on cyber-identity has not analyzed the process of identity formation through examination of text from MUDs (multi-user domains). It placed MUD identity at either end of the classical-postmodern debate. This project logged online interactions between characters and examined the processes by which individual users establish ethos. Logs will demonstrate how communication characteristic within these environments influences the created identity. On this basis it is shown that character identity is now both classical and postmodern within MUDs.
