Tea brewed from Artemisia annua is commonly used as an antimalarial, but its effects on cancer are almost entirely unknown. To test these effects, breast (MCF7) and ovarian (OVCAR-3) cancer cells were cultured in the presence of tea extract and their growth measured. Results suggest that the tea promotes proliferation in both cell lines, raising concerns that use of the tea for malaria treatment may increase cancer risk.
