An automated bacterial image analysis technique for activated sludge systems
PublicFilamentous bacteria represent a major problem in the efficiency of wastewater treatment and current detection methods are both slow and cumbersome, the problem manifesting itself most prominently in the form of clogged primary clarifiers. Our group designed a system that automates one method for filamentous bacteria detection that involved imaging chemically stained sludge samples. Our system utilizes a rotary custom transportation stage and new imaging stage controllers to provide automated acquisition, preparation and imaging of the bacteria more quickly and efficiently than the methods currently being employed.
