Glacier National Park’s Visitor Use Management (VUM) team seeks to improve the efficiency and accuracy of the parking lot monitoring system at Logan Pass. We created a proof-of-concept image capturing and processing system to gather parking dynamics data at the iconic destination while considering the ethics of camera-based monitoring using artificial intelligence (AI). We developed an object detection software and field-tested a range of cameras. We also researched federal codes related to Personal Identifiable Information (PII).
