Rodenticide in Birds of Prey

open in viewerTo analyze the effect and trends of anticoagulant rodenticides in birds of prey, we created a database of past research studies. Focusing on Bald Eagles, Red-Tailed Hawks, and Great Horned Owls, we created an exposure model and food webs to compare to the database information. We found that brodifacoum was the most common anticoagulant rodenticide. When comparing our exposure calculations to the actual exposures to anticoagulant rodenticides, we found that the low estimates best match what is detected. Understanding exposure to rodenticides is important to reduce mortalities in wildlife, especially birds of prey.
