open in viewerThe goal of this project is to research, design, prototype, and analyze a model of the human neck with a carotid artery and a sensor to detect turbulent flow. Ischemic strokes are caused by the blockage of blood flow to the brain and are a life-threatening and debilitating issue to almost 800,000 people in the US each year. These strokes are the result of plaque buildup which can be detected by turbulent flow in the artery. We will begin the process for designing and testing a sensor on a phantom model that is powered by a pump to accurately detect turbulent flow in the carotid artery. Due to its noninvasive nature and low cost, development of this technology could increase early detection in patients and reduce their risk of stroke.
