Multi-layer evaluation of energy-based denial-of-service attacks in mobile ad hoc wireless networks

Public

The purpose of this Major Qualifying Project was to experimentally evaluate the energy consumption of mobile ad hoc routing protocols under different mobility and attack conditions. Using a small wireless network and varying routing protocols, mobility and attack effects were observed at different OSI layers. Results were parameterized into a general model for energy drain and extrapolated to other node configurations. The results indicate that ad hoc wireless routers suffer from potentially serious (but bounded) energy-based denial-of-service vulnerabilities.
