Coiled stents from shape memory polyurethanes

Public

A polyurethane-based Shape Memory Polymer was used to develop a surgical stent. Polymer tubes were extruded and trained to transform into a coil upon reaching a temperature of 37C. The optimum training conditions to obtain maximum recovery consisted of transforming the tube to a coil at 45? and heat setting it at 90C for 75 seconds. This stent offers several advantages over conventional metallic stents used in cardiovascular surgeries and additional tests are required to determine its efficacy.
