open in viewerThe objective of this MQP was to reduce non-value added time during the machining of a high volume part for the project sponsor JAZ Manufacturing. Direct observation and measurement of the machining process was performed to gain understanding and determine any problems. The methods used included value stream mapping, axiomatic design, Taylor’s tool life equation and engineering economic analysis. Decomposing the functional requirements of machining the part showed that a significant reduction in machining time was possible. The conclusion shows that an analysis of non-value added time, along with the application of the best practices in machining can yield a large reduction in processing time, increased productivity, and substantial savings for the company.
