Integration of Environmental Social Governance (ESG) into an established Construction Company: Why and How? Sponsored by Turner Construction Company.

Pubblico Deposited

The following research was developed by a student team from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and was sponsored by Turner Construction Company. Turner Construction Company is 100+ year old company actively pursuing the integration of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles within its supply chain, under the framework of its sustainability strategy, "Building Today to Transform Tomorrow." This strategy is organized around three core principles: sustaining the planet, transforming the industry, and safeguarding workers' well-being. Our team was asked to investigate the integration of Turner’s ESG strategy into the sponsor’s supply chain. Our investigation involved background research into sustainability practices across various industries to inform Turner's approach and interviews with partners of Turner's supply chain to understand the varying levels of ESG awareness and implementation among suppliers. The study resulted in the development of an ESG roadmap tailored to Turner's projects, aiming to embed strategic decision-making regarding ESG throughout project lifecycles. We also developed a set of recommendations from the study that emphasize prioritizing sustainable construction materials, conducting comprehensive life cycle assessments of products, and pursuing accredited certifications and standards. Our work culminated into a pamphlet for Turner to use as a resource when introducing sustainability to their suppliers. The pamphlet guides a supplier how to implement sustainability practices into their business strategy as well as how to engage Turner for sustainability guidance. Alongside our work for Turner, our team aimed to understand the need for sustainable construction practices through practical application in our community. We conducted an energy analysis Unity Hall to emphasize the efficacy of sustainable design strategies in mitigating environmental impact. We also utilized GREET software as a tool to conduct sensitivity analyses to highlight the advantages of adopting sustainable alternatives, particularly in concrete usage. Our research into this practical application illustrates the significance of life cycle assessments, adoption of eco-friendly materials, transparent reporting practices, and resource optimization for future projects. This project encompasses an interdisciplinary approach to investigating methods of integrating ESG practices across a supply chain within the complex construction industry. Particularly focused on the concrete segment of the supply chain, the recommendations aim to create sustainability and assist in the fulfillment of the company's ESG commitments.
