Soccer goalkeeper hand injuries can be reduced with the use of a novel protective device modeled using computer aided design and evaluated with finite element analysis. A common thumb injury experienced by soccer goalkeepers is damage to the ulnar collateral ligament in the metacarpal phalangeal joint. Present devices and gloves lack adequate thumb protection from the high impact loading conditions experienced during game play. This report suggests that a device, printed in high strength polymer and analyzed using a physiologically accurate model of the thumb, will reduce injury. Additional work is needed to test a wearable glove version.
