open in viewerThis project's goals were to give the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission an assessment of the commission's powered lawn and garden equipment data, the coding of the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS), and the market trends in the rental industry. The project involved analyzing injury data from In Depth Investigation (IDI) reports, examining product grouping within NEISS codes, and interviewing rental houses, retail stores and power equipment organizations. Based on the results from these methods, it was concluded that higher quality data were required to determine accurate hazard patterns associated with these products. Specifically, it was recommended that certain product codes should be modified and more In-Depth Investigations should be conducted, focusing on areas found that needed to be clarified. It was also determined that the rental market is not currently an issue that needs to be dealt with by the CPSC but may need attention in the future.
