With the isolating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the low utilization of traditional mental health resources, online mental health support services have the potential to become a common place of resource in China. The Xin Foundation, a non-governmental organization (NGO) located in Hangzhou, China, understands this possibility and the importance of supporting other local NGOs in the development of online mental health support services. With a focus on the marketing and user demanded aspects of an app, we gathered information from published literature, surveys in both the U.S. and China along with interviews in China to understand online mental health support services and their success in the U.S. and how that success can be adapted to work in China. The conclusion of our report includes seven features the app should have to be successful, along with information on how to reach different audiences.
