The changing discourse of dietary guidelines in the United States

Public

Previous research on the USDA Dietary Guidelines has focused on their historical or scientific value but few have examined their ability to communicate. This project studies how the discourse of the American Dietary Guidelines and how Alternative Food Pyramids have become significant tools in communicating the nuances of the guidelines. From this analysis, recommendations were made to update the food guide pyramid to reflect the complex messages and audiences for which it is intended, avoid language that creates correlations between recommendations and results and shift the voice of authority back to health professionals.
