This project provided MIT Lincoln Laboratory Group 108 analysts with a tracker to automate the localization of targets in infrared imagery captured by the Airborne Infrared Imager. The tracker utilizes thresholding-based target identification and exploits two spatio-temporal signal processing techniques to attenuate background clutter. The first, a frame differencing technique, employs Scale-Invariant Feature Transform feature detection, image registration, and temporal differencing to subtract background clutter. The second, a spatial filter, emphasizes point targets and attenuates low frequency clutter. The tracker’s performance was evaluated in terms of the tracker failure rate and error to study the effects of spatio-temporal processing on target tracking.
