The goal of this Major Qualifying Project was to optimize variable labor planning and execution in the processes of Breakpack Picking and Quality Control/Finalizing to improve productivity. Through interviews plant tours, and comparison analysis, we identified staffing procedures and tools used at three Staples fulfillment centers in Montgomery, NY, Stockton, CA, and London, OH. Through simulation, we examined the impact of breaks on productivity and made recommendations that could lead to $1.7 million in annual savings.
