Digital imaging of medieval documents

Public

Medieval documents are often affected by mold growth making the underlying text unreadable. Under ultraviolet illumination, the ink fluoresces and can be easily read. The purpose of this project was to provide recommendations for retrofitting a flat-bed scanner for scanning with ultraviolet illumination and for digital text enhancement to improve readability. The digital images acquired will help preserve the parchment by reducing handling and repeated ultraviolet exposure.
