The objective of this project was to improve green-body strength of vitrified grinding wheels that contain frit. Frit imparts negative bonding characteristics to the wet wheel mixture. Also, organic binders, which are added to the wheel mixes to give pre-fired strength, can cause problems during firing. We developed a new technique to increase green strength as well as reducing the use of organic binders. This technology allowed for production of competitive quality wheels with higher pre-fired strength using less organic binders.
