Design for a Toilet Appliance that Automatically Closes the Toilet Lid Before Flushing

open in viewerAcross the globe, differing bacteria and viruses are resulting in thousands of deaths. Some of these harmful bacteria and viruses are aerosolized from toilet bowls. This project team has embarked upon a journey to develop a smart toilet appliance to address the issue of airborne bacterial transmission from toilet bowls. This appliance will limit the spread of harmful bacteria and viruses by closing the seat lid before they are ejected into the air during flushing. In this design, two electric motors (a Brushed DC Motor and a Stepper Motor) along with two sensors (a Button Sensor and an Ultrasonic Sensor) operate in unison with an Arduino microcontroller to create the smart toilet appliance. This appliance is designed to be affordable and easy to install.
