Vocational education in Namibia

open in viewerThis project was funded by a grant from the Department of Education. The purpose of the grant was to promote business connections between Namibia and New England. We realized more meaningful connections could be established if the level of workforce competence in Namibia was elevated. For this reason, the focus of our project was to analyze the Namibian methods of workforce training and to recommend improvements to these methods. Research and interviews indicated that the current system lacked the capacity necessary to train enough students. The result is a large and growing pool of undereducated, unemployed youth. Recommendations were based on investigation of other systems of vocational education. Our recommendations include: increasing capacity by hiring foreign teachers; increasing variety of courses; creating a vocational education program in secondary school; and collaborating with foreign companies to train workers and encourage investment.
