Design of a rotary indexing machine for razor cartridge assembly

Public

The project goal was to enhance productivity of the Pre-Assembly Machine (PAM) used by the Gillette Company to load lubrication strips into cartridges for the Sensor Excel razor by reducing the floor space requirements and increasing the production rate. Our strategy was to alter the configuration of the assembly machine from a linear index/belt to a rotary index/dial configuration. Existing assembly tooling was used wherever possible in the new design. Some existing assembly tooling was modified to accommodate the new configuration. A conceptual 3-D solid model of the rotary indexing machine was built using the CAD program, Pro/Engineer Wildfire. A kinematic analysis was conducted to verify proper operation. Compared to the current PAM, our rotary index design exhibits two solutions with production efficiency increases of both 236% and 275% based on commercial and custom indexes respectively.
