The Effect of Asphalt Pavement on Stormwater Contamination

open in viewerPolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) leaching from asphalt pavement is both an ecological and human health concern. Three constituents of greatest concern were selected from scientific research for investigation. Stormwater runoff samples from field sites were collected, and laboratory samples were created from virgin and reclaimed asphalt for chemical analysis. Methods of analysis included high-performance liquid chromatography, fluorometry, and gas chromatography. These were used to determine the extent to which PAHs leach into stormwater runoff. Existing environmental policy was reviewed and new policy was proposed in light of findings.
