Noninvasive Assessment of Blood Gases: A wearable prototype measuring PtcCO2 and SpO2

Our project designed and implemented a time-domain dual-lifetime referencing (t-DLR) algorithm used for the measurement of carbon dioxide diffusion through the skin transcutaneously. The algorithm and its associated capturing system were implemented on a luminescence-based transcutaneous carbon dioxide monitor designed with off-the-shelf commercial components, including the ADPD4100 a specialized integrated circuit for luminescence sensing. The t-DLR algorithm allows for a more robust measurement system by using a ratiometric approach to eliminate confounding factors such as changes in the monitor’s optical path that can be a source of inaccuracies. Through the inclusion of the t-DLR algorithm, the monitoring device can be progressed further toward a potential remote patient monitoring system. A secondary aspect of this project was the development of an additional monitoring application for the board with the inclusion of a pulse oximetry system that uses a photoplethysmograph (PPG) sensing technique. The PPG waveforms are used to estimate peripheral oxygen saturation, heart rate, and respiration rate. In adding this pulse oximetry system the project enables future research and investigation into an emerging intersection of research between peripheral oxygen saturation and the partial pressure of carbon dioxide. Combining peripheral oxygen saturation and partial pressure of transcutaneous carbon dioxide into a single wearable device will facilitate simultaneous and pertinent measurements for both oxygenation and ventilation.
