open in viewerThe goal of this project was to ascertain the broader status of folk music in Himachal Pradesh (HP) by closely exploring folk music in the Mandi district of HP to provide recommendations on future preservation efforts. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine musicians and three academicians/musicologists. We learned that: 1) folk music is integral to daily life and major events; 2) common instrumentation consists of the dhol, nagara, shehnai, and karnal; 3) waning interest from the younger generation threatens the future of folk music; 4) few preservation efforts are underway. We created a documentary as an accessible resource for an overview of Himachali folk music and determined that creating a digital folk music archive is important to preserving Himachali culture.
