The Effects of Phytoestrogens on Osteoblast Differentiation
PubblicoMenopause occurs because of declining levels of estrogen and puts women at risk for osteoporosis. Promensil, an over-the-counter medication containing phytoestrogens, is marketed to alleviate menopausal symptoms. The goal of this project was to look at the effects of Promensil and phytoestrogens on bone deposition, using a preosteoblast cell line and alkaline phosphatase activity as a marker of mineralization. Over five days, increasing concentrations of Promensil increased alkaline phosphatase activity in preosteoblast cells. Yet, cells indicated decreased confluence and cell viability at increasing Promensil concentrations.
