Electromagnet Eddy Current and Friction Elevator Brake

Public

The next generation of elevator systems is envisioned to use ropeless technology to allow more elevator car density within buildings, increasing the flow of traffic and reducing wasted space. This project aims at developing a new brake system to compliment a ropeless elevator system. Several brake technologies are conceptualized and compared across their effectiveness in meeting the brake system requirements. A combination friction and eddy current technology is chosen and further analyzed. Simulations are conducted to validate the feasibility of the technology and provide insight on the performance and limitations as an elevator braking system. Recommendations are presented for continuing development of the combination eddy current brake technology through further simulations and design.
