James Fenimore Cooper had many underlying motives, both financial and personal, that obscured his depiction of Native Americans. From a revisionist point of view, he sent mixed messages to his audience. While Cooper cannot be blamed for the subsequent genocide of millions of Native American peoples, his works echo the pioneer notion of subjugating American Indians in order to expand the borders of the United States.
