This work investigates different electronic communication platforms and how people utilize them. A survey was conducted and results were used to gain insight into electronic communication usage in different situations and for different types of users. Survey participants used a median of seven platforms. Analysis of demographic data revealed that people with a higher technological literacy tended to use a larger number of platforms. Similarly, people who spent more time using electronic communication platforms reported using a larger number of platforms. The survey found that when discussing sensitive matters, phone calls are significantly preferred over all other platforms. Another significant factor in the selection of a platform is the intended recipient. Personal communication occurs more commonly on social media platforms, while professional communication occurs mainly on instant messaging platforms. Both types of communication commonly use phone calls, email and SMS, indicating that these platforms are highly versatile.
