Improving SNR in a HF Link with Circularly Polarized Antennas Public
Downloadable ContentDownload PDF
There are several challenges associated with establishing reliable radio communication in the High Frequency (HF) bands over an ionospheric channel. Fading due to phase cancellation of left-hand and right-hand circularly polarized waves at the is one such problem. In an effort to reduce fading, several over-the-air transmission tests were performed with orthogonal receive antennas. Signal processing was performed on the recorded IQ data using MATLAB scripts so that the improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio could be quantifed. Additionally, several off the-shelf linear antennas were characterized using EZNEC and Altair FEKO for circular polarization performance when used in a crossed confguration.
