open in viewerThis paper describes a project to design, analyze, and test an electromagnetic booster separation system for a high-powered model rocket. A first-principles model was derived for the system using magnetic theory for permanent magnets, electromagnetic theory of real finite coils, and circuit theory for a LRC discharge circuit. A prototype system for the coil and circuit was fabricated and tested, and the resulting design was found to successfully minimize the capacitance required, reducing the overall system mass. A finite element analysis was conducted to further prove the derived physics-based model. Results of this analysis and testing are presented, and recommendations for future work are given.
