Design of a Dual Heart Rate Variability Monitor

open in viewerDecreased heart rate variability (HRV) seems to predict increased risks of sudden cardiac death. Thus HRV monitoring may provide additional information that could help in the risk stratification of patients. We designed a dual-channel personal computer based monitor to calculate HR and HRV indices, from electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmogram (PPG) signals. Preliminary tests showed that the PPG signal can be used as an alternative to obtain accurate HRV values from resting subjects.
