Rational design of biomimetic basal lamina analogs for applications in tissue engineering

The goal of this project was to develop a scaffold with an extracellular matrix composition that enhances epidermal cell adhesion by mimicking the basal lamina in native human skin. A high-throughput method was developed which facilitates surface conjugation of basal lamina components (fibronectin, laminin, and collagen) to a collagen-glycosaminoglycan membrane and allows for multiple isolated experiments performed in parallel. The findings of these studies will aid in the design of the "off-the-shelf" skin substitutes with optimal surface composition for epidermal regeneration.
