Design and Development of a Micro Power, Water Current Generator

open in viewerThe goal of the project was to design and manufacture a scalable, liquid current power generator capable of harnessing energy contained in ocean currents for electrical applications. The project team utilized a coreless, direct drive, three phase axial-flux alternator driven by a pair of three-blade, diametrical flow Gorlov turbines. To develop the design, the group used several software including SolidWorks and MATLAB. The group manufactured the machine using several resources, including MakerBot 3D printers, Haas CNC machines, and traditional machine tools. To test the machine, the group first analyzed the machine’s power output at various speeds in a lab environment. Then, the device was tested in rowing tanks to effectively simulate the device in a submerged current flow scenario.
