Solid State Photoreactions of Organic Cocrystals and Alloys

open in viewerPhotodimerization of thymine nucleotide residues is a major contributor to the DNA damage in humans. In this work, we used pyromellitic acid (PMA) and diphenic acid (DPA) and two reactive components, 3-substituted and 5-substituted 2-pyridones, to explore solid state synthesis and reactivity. The templates PMA and DPA serve the same function as the DNA backbone in bringing together the pyridones into reactive orientations in the solid state. We prepared cocrystals of PMA and DPA with 3-X- and 5-X-2-pyridones and analyzed their structures and reactivity by UV irradiation. We also prepared three solid solutions by complexing PMA with two different pyridones; UV irradiation of these alloys is expected to yield multifunctional molecules with full control over their regio- and stereochemistry.
