They've got your number -- an exploration of problems related to Social Security numbers

open in viewerSocial Security numbers have become an unofficial universal identification number in the United States. Over time, this simple number has evolved into a menace, becoming a key mechanism for invasion of privacy and identity theft. The paper classifies current uses and investigated issues related to Social Security numbers. Countermeasures to protect privacy and prevent abuse of Social Security numbers are explored, and two new systems designed to resolve problems currently associated with Social Security numbers are described.
