The production of biomass is one way to harvest abundant solar energy. This report investigates the use of plant oils converted to biodiesel as a source of energy. The U.S. energy demand is compared to oil yields from soy, oil palm and microalgae. Current obstacles to viability are summarized and some recommendations are presented.
