Reducing Delays in the Dialysis Treatment

Kidneys perform vital functions that include the removal of excess fluids and wastes. When kidneys begin to fail, the ability to perform these tasks will become more difficult. Hemodialysis is an artificial process that is able to imitate the functions of the kidneys. The treatment involves the removal of blood from the patient, pumping it through a filtering system, and returning the cleaned blood into the body. Typically, treatment lasts about 3-4 hours and occurs 3-4 times per week. During this process, treatment delays are experienced as the blood is cleaned. The project presents alternative designs and recommendations that can be used to reduce the treatment delays. The derived results are quantified by comparing them with relevant literature to hemodialysis treatment.
