Thermal processing of aerospace components

The first of the three phases constituting this project involved the design of 7 fixtures to be used with 5 different AGC parts during thermal processing cycles. Once implemented, the fixtures will eliminate the distortional problems previously experienced by the parts during heat-treat operations. The second phase of the project comprised of the design of a racking structure, which would be used inside of a vacuum furnace. Its design enables a variety of load configurations and sizes to be situated inside the furnace, while reducing the required set up time. The third and final phase of the project involved the study and subsequent refinement of the processing methods used by Bodycote, Ipswich. A series of new devices used to move and store parts within the facility were designed and a design improvement was made to a previously existing heat-treat fixture. Also included in this phase was a floor plan design, which will improve the production output of the assembly division of Bodycote, Ipswich once integrated.
