Developing effective cryopreservation protocols
PublicThe Hawaii Culture Collection (HCC) contains diverse groups and strains of algae and cyanobacteria. The HCC would benefit from replacing its current method of maintenance, subculturing, with cryopreservation. This project developed easy protocols for cryopreservation, and tested these protocols on six strains representative of the HCC. The cryopreservation protocol was also used to conduct a pilot study into the potential of cryopreserving juvenile Limulus polyphemus. Although no organisms were viable after freezing, this experiment was a valuable first step.
