Before any medical procedure that breaches the skin barrier, preparation of the surgical site is critical as the skin microbiome harbors a wide array of microorganisms. One commonly utilized antiseptic solution contains chlorhexidine gluconate in an alcohol-based solution, which has been shown to be effective against bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Although effective, the antiseptic solution can impart a sudden chilling sensation when applied on patients. This project aimed to create a modified applicator that incorporated a warming mechanism to reduce patient discomfort. The team designed an antiseptic applicator prototype that contains the materials (lithium chloride and water) required to create a heat of mixing reaction that warms the antiseptic solution prior to application.
