Extraction and Separation of Phytoestrogens from Over-the-Counter Supplements
PublicDownloadable Content
open in viewerThis study involves the analysis of over-the-counter phytoestrogen supplements due to their anti-proliferative effects on breast cancer cells. Phytoestrogens have been used as alternatives to traditional hormone therapy in postmenopausal women. TLC and HPLC were employed to optimize extraction and separation of these compounds from over-the-counter supplements. Testing of Promensil, Black Cohosh, and Soy Isoflavone supplements revealed that significant anti-proliferative effects observed in Promensil and Black Cohosh may be attributable to their combination of the phytoestrogens daidzein and biochanin A.
