Developing an Analytical Technique for Treatment of GenX in Water using Ion-Exchange Resin & ICP-MS

open in viewerPer- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are pervasive man-made chemicals that include PFOA, PFNA, and others, that have deleterious effects on the environment and the human body. GenX was recently developed as a replacement, however there is a lack of data on treatment options and analytical difficulty. The goals of this project were to create and test a method to measure C13 tagged GenX concentrations using ICP-MS and evaluate treatment of GenX in water using Purolite Purofine PFA694E ion exchange resin. The treatment results showed up to 3.867 ppm of GenX was successfully removed from water, providing a 0.023 mg GenX/g resin absorption capacity. The results illustrate that the chosen resin was effective for treatment and the ICP-MS method can quantify GenX during treatment trials.
