A general literature review of surface metrology, and specifically its application in sports engineering, is conducted. This literature review is designed to educate and inform researchers on the current state-of-the-art to help guide current and future research for the advancement of surface performance of sports equipment. Enhanced surface performance begins by incorporating surface metrology into the design and manufacturing stages, and in numerous instances, this integration contributes to injury prevention and enhances overall safety.
