Analysis of Mistake Messages

open in viewerASSISTments is a math-based educational platform used by a few hundred researchers and middle school teachers combined. The platform allows teachers to compose problem sets relevant to class curriculum, while researchers can readily analyze data from students solving the problems. One function of ASSISTments is to generate adaptive, error-dependent messages for students called "mistake messages" or “feedback messages” that students receive directly after making a mistake. In this paper, we describe our process in trying to analyze on a 50-question problem set of 2-step algebraic multiplication and division problems built in ASSISTments, the goal to identify changes in student performance and behavior depending on whether they've received a message for their mistake or not.
