The Department of Natural and Environmental Resources has installed over 300 mooring buoys around Puerto Rico. These mooring buoys are designed to be used as alternatives to anchors. Mooring buoys protect important benthic communities from being damaged. In Puerto Rico, boaters tend to tie hull-to-hull with other boats, a behavior termed rafting. Boaters sometimes raft while using mooring buoys, which causes excess strain on the buoys and can severely damage them. Our project goal was to design a mooring buoy that accommodates rafting. A rafting mooring buoy will allow boaters to continue rafting without the need to drop anchor.
