Sustainable Wastewater Treatment at La Escuela Agrícola San Francisco de Asís

open in viewerThis project designed and implemented a sustainable treatment system for the wastewater at the Escuela Agrícola San Francisco de Asís. Using site analysis, interviews, and water quality testing, the original state of the system was determined. A plan was made and installed to repurpose an old pool into an ecological filter for the treatment of over 33% of the total wastewater the school produces. In conjunction with the pool, floating treatment wetlands were made to clean up the existing wastewater pond. The team recommends that the school maintain the filter, add wastewater from additional school buildings, and add plants to the system to enhance treatment. It also recommends that the school add floating treatment wetlands to decontaminate the tilapia pond and later repurpose to a similar septic system. Finally, the whole site should be landscaped as a park.
