Wireless indoor geolocation system

Public

For the past two years WPI's CWINS laboratory has been involved in research regarding the development of an indoor geolocation system. Much of this research has been sponsored by DARPA and has been performed in conjunction with TASC/ LITTON. This MQP was initiated as an offshoot of this research. The purpose of this MQP was to begin the development process of an indoor geolocation prototype that can be used to locate the position of persons or objects in an indoor environment. The primary contribution of our project was the development of a basic spread spectrum transmitter/receiver software model that has the capability to estimate the distance between the transmitter and receiver base on measured channel response. Using several of these distance measurements, a location algorithm was used to estimate the location of the receiver. The design of this transmitter/receiver model involved the learning and utilization of several technical tools and techniques. One of which was learning the operation and functionality of the network analyzer which is used to provide channel profiles for use in the transmitter/receiver model. The design of the transceiver also required a functional knowledge of the theory behind spread spectrum technology. In order to combine the physical channel measurements with the software model of the transmitter/receiver system several signal processing models were required. It was also necessary to develop and implement a location algorithm that could calculate the position of the receiver when provided with the transmitter locations and their distances from the receiver. It is our hope that this system and the techniques investigated and implemented in the design of the system will serve as a useful tool in the further investigation into this cutting edge technology.
